In the studio
July 2020 | New York
Continuing with our studio visits, Pierre Marie Brisson’s latest series of seventeen works on paper thematically explores the artist’s process as he works during the pandemic. These textural studies were created in a much smaller format which he attributes to following a consistent routine in response to the day-to-day stillness of his studio. Brisson constructed the series utilizing his customary collage technique in which he cuts, paints, and folds his shapes into captivating designs. With a meditative focus, Brisson has productively embraced life under quarantine which he aptly compares to monastic isolation and has emerged with a breadth of imagery from nature. Many of these are favored motifs but with new forms which pay specific tribute to way nature has benefitted from the lack of human noise. The work is both familiar and entirely new, a reflection of this unusual time in our lives.
